A Quantitative Study of the DNA and RNA in the Livers of Albino Mice During the Estrus Cycle

چکیده

Several investigators have suggested that the nucleic acid content of mouse liver varied with the estrus cycle. Nucleic acids were extracted with trichloroacetic acid and ethanol. The quantity of DNA and RNA was determined with a spectrophotometer. No significant differences were observed in the quantity of DNA or RNA throughout the estrus cycle. Diversity in the amount of nucleic acids present among the livers of non-litter mates was one-third greater that that among litter mates. In studies of the nucleio acid content of mouse liver, little is gained by controlling the estrus cycle, but using litter mates is suggested to demonstrate small fluctuations. In the continuing attempt to understand carcinogenesis, any changes which occur during the induction of a neoplasm are of obvious interest. Hepatomas and cirrhosis of the liver have been induced by oral and intraperitoneal administration of carbon tetrachloride. Several workers (Stowell, et al., 1951; Tsuboi, et al., 1951) showed definite changes in the amount of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) present in such abnormal livers. Dudley, Coppock, and Johnson( 1959) demonstrated a difference in the nucleic acid content of normal livers and that of livers of mice fed carbon tetrachloride. However, this difference was largely obscured by the variation within the experimental and control groups. Factors such as age, enzymes, and hormones might cause a variation in the amount of DNA and RNA present in normal mice. Until these variables have been investigated, interpretation of the data pertaining to the effects of carcinogenic agents on nucleic acid content will be difficult. Spriggs ( 1963) found that the nucleic acid content of mouse liver varied accmding to age and he reported that a cyclic pheoomenon, suggestive of the estrus cycle, was evident in his data. Vadous effects on liver cells have been ascribed to gonadal hormones. Allan ( 1944) demonstrated that estrogen increased the number of binucleate liver cells in rabbits, but Bullough ( 1946) showed that esterone did not increase the number of mitoses in mouse liver cells. Bond ( 1961) described a protein found in the liver of only male rats. Bond suppressed this protein by castration and restored it by the ,administration of testosterone. Modulation of radiation induced changes in nucleic acid content of liver of Swiss albino mouse by Tinospora cordifolia (Miers)

Background: Radiotherapy is the main modality of cancer treatment. There are many chemical radioprotectors which unfortunately have lethal or toxic effect. Therefore the search is on to find out natural plant based radioprotectors. A well known medicinal plant, which is more acceptable to the body, Tinospora cordifolia, was tested in animal tissues against gamma radiations. Radioprotectiv...

Effects of Methyl paraben neonatal treatment on puberty onset, estrus cycle, and development of ovarian follicles in female mice (Balb/c)

Introdution:Methyl paraben (MP) is an xsenoestrogen pollutant that is classified into preservatives due to its antibacterial properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of MP in female neonatal mice on puberty timing, estrus cycle, and ovarian follicle profile. Methods:In this experimental study, one-day-old Balb/c mice were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 8), i...

The effects of Formononetin Derived from Red Clover During Pregnancy on Puberty, Some Reproductive Parameters and Lordosis Behavior of Female Mice

Abstract   Background & aim: Formostontin is a non-steroidal phytostrogenic polyphenolic plant with estrogen-like properties found in some plants, including red clover. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of formostontin during pregnancy on the onset of puberty, estrus cycle, genital weights and their children's lordosis behavior.   Methods: In the present experimental stu...

Antisteroidogenic Activity of Ethanol Extract of Ammania baccifera (L.) Whole Plant in Female Albino Mice Ovaries

Ethanol (90%) extract of Ammania baccifera (L.) whole plant (EEAB) was evaluated for possible antister-oidogenic activity in mature female mice ovaries. The ethanol extract at the doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight (i.p) arrested the normal estrus cycle at dioestrus phase and significantly decreased weight of ovaries. The cholesterol and ascorbic acid content in ovaries were significan...

Anti-Fertility Activity of Methanol Extract of Bassia latifolia and Cajanus cajan in Female Albino Mice Ovaries

Bassia latifolia bud and Cajanus cajan seed were evaluated for anti-fertility activity in mature female mice. Anti-fertility activity was evaluated by observing the estrus cycle, body weight, wet weight of ovaries, steroidogenic enzymes, and substrates. Bassia latifolia bud and Cajanus cajan seed extract arrested normal oestrous cycle at dioestrous stage. The decrease in weight of ovar...
